Icons, Heroes, and Zeroes

Superheroes invade Druid Pub

Superheroes, TV personalities, and a Wal-Mart greeter descended upon the Druid Pub on Saturday, June 19, to raise funds for a new website in the city, The Post Popular Hyperground.

The “Icons, Heroes, and Zeroes…OH MY!” costume party drew a crowd of 93 people, just over half in costumes ranging from Supergirl, Wolverine, Silk Spectre, Racer X, and the Flash to David Hasselhoff’s Baywatch character, Hunter S. Thompson, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A panel of celebrity judges – Pardee Badyal (Alternative Trends Magazine), Jay Bardyla (Happy Harbor Comics), Andrew Foley (author of Cowboys and Aliens), Karin Weekes (BioWare), and Galen Scorer (Red the Agency) – awarded three prizes to costumed revellers.

Best Female costume went to Christy McPhillamey for Elasti-Girl from The Incredibles, Best Male to Daniel Schneider for Sockerang from the Axe Cop internet comic, and Most Authentic to Peter Roccia for Rebis from Grant Morrison’s The Doom Patrol.

Prizes included signed copies of BioWare games, limited-edition posters, and collectable statues of Batman and Zatanna from DC Comics.

“Basically, what we’re asking pop culture to do is adapt or die,” explains Peter Roccia, a Grant MacEwan English professor and founding member of the website’s Revelationary Council. “In a world of memes, viral media, and nanoproduction, how can our present pop culture survive? Our goal is to usher in this new stage in cultural evolution.”

The website will feature music, mysticism, art, and articles as a way for writers, artists, and musicians to imagine this post-popular future.

The event raised over $800.00, and all proceeds will go towards securing server space and developing the website.
